September kept the Summer going for hip-hop in 2019 with releases from IDK, Earthgang, Stormzy, Ghostface Killah, JPEGMAFIA, Sampa the Great, Kevin Gates, DaBaby, and the return of Gang Starr with J. Cole, but there was also a sullen turn into Fall with the retirements (thus far) of both CupcakKe and Nicki Minaj, in quick succession and sudden announcement.

The winner this month, however, is a rapper that has been slowly rising as a dark horse of the industry representing Brooklyn hip-hop: Young M.A. She captured our attention with “Ooouuu” and its slew of remixes back in 2016, and this month saw the release of her debut studio album, Herstory in the Making. The record is mostly all her with little to no features, and appearing on Hot 97 with Funk Flex, M.A showed us why, taking on the freestyle with ease.
