Back when Roseandblog was running “The Week in Music” roundups, there was a segment entitled #NoRoleModelz, in reference to J. Cole’s track “No Role Modelz” off the platinum-with-no-features record 2014 Forest Hills Drive, that featured the news regarding which artists or musicians disappointed us the most with their horrible behavior.

In keeping the tradition of awarding honors named after songs, the Roseandblog is proud to present the “Man of the Bounce Award,” named after ScHoolboy Q’s hit 2010 track “Man of the Year,” awarded to the artist with the most braggadocios and bounciest song of the year. It’s an honor that can only be truly represented in homage to ScHoolboy Q’s celebratory anthem.

2017 was full of bounce, from pop-rap hits like Calvin Harris’ “Slide (feat. Frank Ocean & Migos)” and “Wild Thoughts (feat. Rihanna & Bryson Tiller)” by DJ Khaled, but they were two singles that, although bouncy as all hell, didn’t have that je ne sais quoi that comes with a song as braggadocios and celebratory of success as ScHoolboy Q’s “Man of the Year.” For a track that poppin’, we need a little more grit than what Calvin and Khaled had to offer with their radio bangers.

Honest contenders and honorable mentions were abound for this award this year. Stormzy’s “Big For Your Boots” was a grime anthem, as well as “Big Bank (feat. T.I.)” by Big K.R.I.T. for the South, and Kendrick Lamar’s DAMN. was full of worthy winners such as “HUMBLE.” and “LOYALTY (feat. Rihanna).” Rising rap group Brockhampton had some amazingly catchy braggadocios tracks like “Gold” and “Junky,” and female MC’s such as Cardi B’s “Bodak Yellow” and Rapsody’s “Sassy” proved some new dominance and contenders for the title of Queen of Rap. Hell, even Syd from the Internet with her song “All About Me” amazed listeners with her ability to make some “(Wo)man of the Bounce” worthy tracks.

The winner of the “Man of the Bounce Award” for 2017 however, is none other than Vince Staples for his song “Big Fish,” one of the bounciest and braggadocios tracks ever made, save just 2017. With lyrics like “I was up late night ballin’/Countin’ up hundreds by the thousand,” “Big Fish” seems to perfectly mirror the themes and feel of “Man of the Year,” which states “Nigga, I’m the life of the beat/Fuck that, this year gotta eat, bounce for the crown.” Staples truly bounced for the crown on “Big Fish,” highly deserving of such an honor. Hell, the “Man of the Bounce Award” could even be renamed the “Biggest Fish Award” next year, that’s how much Staples deserves this award.

It’s a party over here, Shake it for the man of the year, man of the bounce.
