Some people may say that Ludacris is old news, and this new-wave of rap is what’s popular now, but I beg to differ. While Ludacris might not be a new name, with “gangsta rap” becoming a thing of the past, on Ludaverses (Mixtape), Ludacris raps over popular beats such as, Timbaland’s, “Tom Ford,” from Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail, Hit-Boy’s, “H.A.M.,” from Kanye West & Jay-Z’s Watch the Throne, and 2 beats from Nicki Minaj’s latest release, The Pinkprint, and I have to argue that he does some better than the artists themselves.
Ludacris has always had amazing flow, and there’s no better way, in my opinion, to reassert your talent and presence in the gangsta rap world then to take extremely popular rap beats and rap better than the artists who recorded them did. It’s an insanely risky move, but for a free mixtape, Ludacris nails it. I’m surprised to say this, but I’m excited for his official release and return, Ludaversal, due out Mar. 31.
