For Childish Gambino, The narrative of Because the Internet worked because it was honest. I’m all for artists to experiment and try new things (Daft Punk’s Random Access Memories was the jam), but the thing about experimentation is that it doesn’t always turn out the way you thought it would. In creating a half trap-rap half pop/r&b mixtape, then Gambino succeeded, but much like Outkast’s Speakerboxxx/The Love Below, it’s better when they’re together.
There isn’t much that is actually said on S T N M T N / Kauai. Having fun and rapping about it is all great here and there, but an entire mixtape dedicated to it is a little much, especially when you’re coming off of Because The Internet. I guess what I’m trying to get across is that S T N M T N / Kauai seems, though at some times ear candy, purposeless. Nonetheless, Gambino, lyrically, seems to be keeping up his wordplay and humor on the same great level as it was on Because The Internet, and there’s nothing I love to see more than talent consistency. Because The Internet had purpose, emotion, story, honesty. I’m not saying that every track should sound like Because The Internet, but they should definitely mean as much.
